Roma McLaughlin

Roma has practised as a painter, book illustrator and teacher for many years and has been practising papercut art for more than a decade. At first, she used paper cutting to create intricate designs for collages in her paintings, but eventually, she began using it as her primary medium. Some of the subjects she has explored are birds, feathers, nests and eggs which reflected ideas of home, nurturing and belonging as well as images of her surrounding urban environment as she observed the rapid urban development in the city of Melbourne.

Currently, Roma's work is inspired by the powerful tides, monumental cliffs, and landscapes of the Southern Ocean of Victoria. She also draws inspiration for her papercuts from the rivers and parklands around where she lives in Montmorency.

Roma’s work has been featured in the V&A publication “Papercrafts: A Maker’s Guide”. She has also recently published a book titled “The Alchemy of Cats”.

Roma has collaborated with artist Kathy Fahey on several exhibitions and the two share a studio in Eltham.
